Search and Rescue Training

At Zehfuss K-9 Training Center, we specialize in search and rescue dog training to equip them with the skills needed for small-area searches. Led by Matthias Zehfuss, a Certified Dog Behaviorist and Professional Dog Trainer, our search and rescue classes focus on dog behavior modification and developing your dog's ability to locate individuals in various environments.

Course Description

  • Small Area Searches: Dogs learn techniques for efficiently searching confined spaces, including buildings, wooded areas, and other challenging terrain.
  • Explanation And Theory: Handlers receive instruction on the principles behind scent detection and search methodologies, enhancing their understanding of canine behavior and search techniques.
  • Scent Discrimination: Dogs are trained to discern specific scents and distinguish between target odors and environmental distractions.
  • Runaways: Dogs are taught to track and locate individuals who have wandered off or become lost, using their scent detection abilities to navigate and locate the missing person.
  • Find and Re-Find Commands: Handlers learn effective communication techniques to guide their dogs during search missions, including commands for locating and revisiting target scents.

Highlights

The course consists of six 30-minute classes (one class per week). To ensure the success of our search and rescue program, dogs must have completed basic obedience training. Dogs should have a solid foundation in off-leash obedience to facilitate effective search missions.
